Telephone in your TV??
This semester I feel like I'm busier than I've been before. I guess it's because I work in the evenings every day, and go to class during the day (making the each day long). To bring you up to speed on what I've been doing...
Last week in Biotech Lab (ISAT 305), I dissolved cell membranes and isolated the DNA of the bacteria that carries GFP (Green Florescent Protein) so that through the semester, we will continue to build on previous work to ultimately grow bacteria colonies that glow!
In Telecom (ISAT 464) we had a guest lecture from Dr. Emil Salib, a new professor in ISAT from Telcordia (a small telecommunications research lab, that was formerly part of Bell Labs). He spoke to us about new technologies that allow complete convergence of communication devices. An example of what convergence is would be allowing someone to experience everything they would using a telephone through the television. He demonstrated this example with a technology that allows a person to control telephone calls (Block, Answer, Send to Voicemail) while watching TV from their remote control. If you had this installed at home, when someone called you a small pop-up in the corner would appear on your TV screen, showing you the Caller ID information plus a picture of the person, and then you could choose to answer, etc.
In Software Development (ISAT 340) we are building basic databases, and learning database theory. This includes relationships between tables, and specific properties of tables allowing data integrity.
My general classes are going well, and I'm excited about what the rest of the semester will bring. Last weekend Lauren and I went to see The Exorcism of Emily Rose. We enjoyed it, but were surprised by the focus on the court case that resulted from Emily Rose's death (rather than focusing on the life and experience of Emily Rose). Looking forward to the weekend when the JMU Dukes Football team has an opportunity to redeem themselves at home on Saturday (I heard rumors of fireworks?)!
